The Institute for Far East Studies is a research institute affiliated to Kyungnam University, established for the purpose of providing theoretical approaches and policy alternatives to the establishment of peace in Northeast Asia and unification of the Korean Peninsula. Since its establishment in 1972, it has been actively conducting research and academic activities and evaluated as having the most systematic achievements in the field of unification and North Korea. Based on these research accomplishments, Kyungnam University's Graduate School of North Korean Studies and the University of North Korean Studies of nowadays were able to be established. With this as an opportunity, both organizations have created a synergistic effect organizationally combining the research function of the institute and the educational function of the graduate school.
